How to Plan a Kitchen Renovation

If you’re a keen instagrammer, you’ll probably know that renovation accounts are a big deal right now.

Even celebrities are getting their hands dirty, and swapping photos of martinis and designer clothes for bi-folds and room plans.

With holiday money going spare, and a year spent largely indoors, people are starting to seriously invest in their homes.

We’ve broken down the kitchen renovation process into key steps to give you a starting point:

1. What do you want?

Your kitchen may be just one part of a bigger project. So firstly, decide what you want from your whole kitchen extension. You’ll need an idea of what your budget is, and also how much time you’re prepared to personally dedicate to the project.

 2. Find an architect

You may want to consider enlisting the help of an architect. Some will go far beyond just producing plans, by project managing the build and liaising with suppliers. But they come at a cost.

Always research their previous work to ensure that your goals for the kitchen renovation project align.

3. Planning Permission, building regs

Approval for fairly straightforward planning permission normally takes up to eight weeks, although planning departments are quite busy at the moment so it’s best to leave a little longer.

Ensure you account for this in your time frames, and approach your architect for advice on any parts of the process.

4. Getting the work done

When you’re choosing a builder and designer for your kitchen, always check out their reviews and previous projects online. They should be forthcoming with pricings, past client contact details and not suspiciously cheaper than all your other quotes.

A good kitchen designer will work with you to get the kitchen of your dreams working with your available budget.  They will then also work alongside your builder to ensure things run smoothly when the kitchen goes in, early planning is essential for plumbing, electrics and ventilation. They're a vital part of your next steps in the kitchen extension process.

5. The floor plan

Newsflash. This part is really important. Get it wrong, and the same annoying point will niggle away at you for years to come. Because it’s the one thing that’s nigh on impossible to change at a later date.

So take your time, and start with as blank a canvas as your space allows. You may have the unique opportunity to completely start again. Consider here all the shortcomings of your previous kitchen, to ensure you don’t repeat them.

Chat with your kitchen designer. What does your dream kitchen look like? Open plan? Multifunctional? State of the art tech? If you can imagine it, a goodkitchen designer should be able to make it a reality.

6. Lights, camera, action
