A classic kitchen with a modern twist

The classic kitchen – it’s timelessly beautiful.

There’s nothing quite as luxurious and stylish as a sophisticated shaker kitchen. But getting the design right is crucial if your new kitchen is going to stand the test of time and not ‘feel’ out of date in a few short years.

There are a few ways you can ensure a traditional kitchen is bang up to date by incorporating more function and style into the design. This recent project of ours in St. Albans is a perfect example.

Be choosy with your colour scheme

We used an in-frame shaker from the Audus Bespoke Range for this kitchen. The overall design theme and style are still classic, but using navy instead of the usual nude palette makes more of a statement.

Navy instantly gives a modern feel, and its versatility means it pairs well with many other colours. It looks stunning here with the pale grey bar stools and white Corian worktop.

Include urban elements

Including contemporary materials in the design, such as wood and brickwork accents, instantly catapults this kitchen into 2022 and way beyond. The exposed brick gives this space an industrial feel, while the carefully placed wooden detail keeps it from looking too ‘cosy cottage.’

Less-is-more lighting

Who’d have thought strip lighting would ever make a comeback? Used here as a slightly different concept, overhanging the island, serves both a form and function purpose and helps tie the entire traditional yet contemporary look come together.
